Solution of 1000 ppm
« on: April 12, 2016, 03:35:08 PM »
Hello,

I was having a discussion earlier at work with a coworker. We needed to create a solution of 1000ppm MeOH in NPA. I had no idea how to handle this. He suggested the following. (density of MeOH is 792000 mg/l)
1000ppm MeOH = 1000mg MeOH /liter NPA
1000ppm MeOH = (1000mg MeOH/792000 mg/l)/liter NPA
1000ppm MeOH = 0.0013l MeOH/liter NPA

So according to him I would have to measure 1,3ml MeOH and dilute to 1 liter NPA. I don't know if this would be the correct way for the NPA solution. I know for water this would be correct but the density of NPA is different from water. Does this have to be taken in account somewhere?

If you mean n-propanol (its density is 0.803) you did 30 % error. Using simply V/V ratio you do less then 2 % error (W/W).

AWK yeah I mean n-propanol. So just to be sure, with the v/v ratio and the 1000 ppm solution you mean that I should take 1ml MeOH and then add to n-propanol to the one litre mark?

Yes, this number gives you an error of 1.3 %.
