« on: April 15, 2016, 04:08:35 PM »
Hey!!

I came across a reaction of CH3CH2CH2CH2OH with (MeCO)2O with the product being n-BuOCOMe

I'm not really sure what is going on here, any help??

Thanks

Do you recognise any of the reactants? Can you draw them out (may help)

I'm not entirely sure what the second reactant is

If I didn't misread the chemical formula, (MeCO)2O should be a compound with an O atom as the central atom, and two (MeCO) group bonded to it.

And 'Me' means methyl group. 'CO' is C=O.

Try to draw the structure of the second reactant now.

This is an esterification with acetic anhydride. Everry textbook contains this reaction (if not, look at synthesis of aspirin)
