FeCl3: chemical bond type?
« on: May 07, 2016, 07:01:51 AM »
Hi!

I don't understand very well if FeCl3 is a complex metal (a transition one) or it's symple a ionic compound/or covalent one??
In other words what's the nature of each chemical bond between Fe and Cl??

1) I can assume that is   a coordinative bond between three Cl- ions and the positive charged ion Fe3+

2)or I have to see it as the covalent bond ,where the  three neutral atoms of Cl have put in common  one (for each)  electron (s) with the neutral atoms of Fe3 (that also put in common one elctron for each of the Cl)

And if I have the compound FeCl4- the negative charge what does it mean??

The oxidation numer of Fe3+ wuld be 3+
So for its definition I have to assume that tree Cl of FeCl4 made a covalen bond while the last one a coordinative one (so the negative charge of the compound....because  the two electrons come from a Cl- ion)

Some help??
Thankss!!:)
