Chemicals with a strong smell
« on: May 27, 2016, 06:04:48 PM »
Hi there

Do you all have any chemicals that you can think of in a laboratory that give off a very strong smell and should be used under the chemhood

I just used Glacial Acetic Acid today and I had no idea how strong the smell was . from now on I am using it under the chemhood

I have created a list so far, if anyone has anything else I can add that would be great:
* Acetic Acid (Glacial Acetic Acid)
* Acetonitrile
* Ammonia
* Beta-mercaptoethanol
* Cadaverine
* Chloroform
* Formaldehyde
* Hydrogen sulfide
* Methanol
* N-Butanol
* Oleum
*Paraformaldehyde
* Sulfuric acid
*Trimethylamine
*Virkon

Thanks!

Before you start work which any kind of chemicals, you should read the safety and MSDS papers about it. Also non smelling chemicals may be have to be used under a hood.

Yes, definitely read the SDSs - the use of the fume cupboard is nothing to do with how pleasing or appalling the smell is, it is to protect you from harm.
Tonight I’m going to party like it’s on sale for $19.99!

Not everything, sulfuric acid or sulfates don't have bad smell.

Yea - and not all chemicals need a fume hood...  water is kinda safe without a fume hood.

Well ok, almost everyhing with sulfur smells like hell, we used some thiols lately in a lab and it was quite nasty.

Well sure, but I never work with chemicals outside hood, except for weighing
