Acrylic and Isopropyl Alcohol reaction question
« on: June 01, 2016, 10:53:41 AM »
Can someone explain what occurs exactly when acrylic is exposed to isopropyl alcohol and is the only end effect from the exposure fracturing of the acrylic?

I am a bit confused.  Do you mean acrylic alcohol, acrylic acid, or something else?  What is your application?

Polymethylmethacrylate, PMMA, which goes by the trade name of Plexiglass or Acrylic, can be attacked by a number of solvents.  Some plastics, when exposed to certain solvents, end up "crazed" cracked on the exposed surface but not all the way through.  So that could be what's happening

The crackling effect is often cited but I haven't seen explanations, only "surface tension" which doesn't convince me.

I'd be ready to believe that solvents swell polymers, and that Pmma being more brittle gets cracks from the difference in swelling between surface and depth, be it during the exposure or during the evaporation of the solvent which happens more quickly at the surface.

Does it happen often with Pmma? I've read it about Pc up to now.
