Please help with Synthesis
« on: August 30, 2016, 08:33:06 PM »
Hi guys! I need to synthesize a compound from a carbon chain of four or fewer carbons. I would post a picture, as I am unsure of its IUPAC name, but it seems I cannot so I will describe it as best as I can.

It consists of a six-carbon chain with an ethyl substituent at the second carbon that has a dash bond for the methylene group leading to the terminal methyl.
There are carbonyl groups on the terminal carbons.
The third and fourth carbons have CN groups, attached with a dash and a wedge respectively.
I guess it resembles this:
  O       CN              O
HC-CH-CH-CH-CH2-CH
      Ch2    CN
      Ch3

I'm just not really sure where to begin here. I know that the molecule isn't very complex and I have tried to analyze it retrosynthetically, so I know how to get to the pieces I need, with the exception of the nitriles because that hasn't been covered in my class yet, but I am unsure of how to put them all together.

Thanks in advance!

Do you want it opticaly pure? You have several stereocenters in the molecule.
