Electronegativities/activity of polyatomic ions
« on: August 13, 2004, 12:15:28 PM »
can anybody here tell me the electronegativities/electropositivities of polyatomic and monoatomic ions? is there an activity series?

By definition, electronegativities are limited to atoms to account for bond behavior between atoms.

right, and bonding applies to polyatomic ions.  you know what i'm talking about. :-\

Not applicable. I think you may be misunderstanding reactivity of an ion versus electronegativity of a bond. Electronegativity is actually a nifty topic and I may address it in a future article.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

Are you familiar with the electromotive potential series for ions for oxidation reduction reactions?

very much so.  however, i do not know how this works with polyatomics.

Well, it doesn't work if the aim of your question is bonding. But  for polyatomics  it's a measure of the ability of the element in a polyatomic to reduce, for eg.
NO3- + 4H+ +  3e- ---> NO + 2H2O  E=+.96 (nitrogen reduction)
MnO4- + 8H+  + 5e- ---> Mn2+  + 4H2O  E=+1.49 (Manganese reduction)

may i ask where you found those figures?

also, do you have an activity series?

Here

or appendixes of analytical textbooks.

An Activity series doesn't come to mind, but I'll let you know if I come across one.
