pKa and acid/base properties of beclomethasone
« on: May 24, 2006, 11:11:41 AM »
hi,
I have a Chemistry/pharmacy assignment, and i cannot seem to find a solution.
I have to find the pKa of beclomethasone - a corticosteroid used for asthma and hayfever. I cannot find it nor can my lecturer (feel free to help me out, but I'm not too worried). So can I assume that there is none? Does every molecule have a pKa? or are there some that don't? I was hoping that beclomethasone doesn't have any acid/base properties, and therefore no pKa. Which leads me to the second part of my assignment, which asks - "Comment on the acid/base character of this molecule.  What would be the major form at pH 1?  What would be the major form at pH 8?"
If I don't have a pKa, I cannot answer this question right??

Thanks for your *delete me*
PS - sorry If this is in the wrong category, wasn't sure!

Sure
this has all the info you could hope for - Except pka!

I think Jaguar has a reliable pKa predictor feature. Am I wrong?

Well, I can't say I remember anything from organic chemistry, but I don't see nothing acidic nor basic in this structure - thus no pKa/pKb. But it will be better confirmed by someone with an 'organic' eye :)

Everything has a pKa!

The most acidic thing looks to be the alcohol, so I would put the pKa around 17.

I know, I wasn't precise enough. What I meant was that there is nothing acidic nor basic enough to affect water solutions - just like ethanol or methanol.
