« on: May 28, 2006, 07:16:04 AM »
Hi
Is it possible to make double perfume smells so two smells are emitted from th perfume a human can smell?
If so how would yo go about it to create such a smell?
Thanks so much

Yes
Make your perfume out of two different compounds that humans can smell

A 'smell' is simply gaseous molecules binding to olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity, and stimulating parts of your brain accordingly. If you know what chemical is resposible for a particular smell, you can synthesise it, put it in a bottle, and charge people large amounts of money for it.

This is why perfumers charge lots of money.

But it could take years to find the formula mixtures yes?

Only some people have smell good enough to be able to prepare good composition and they can't work too long daily smelling. Note that any perfume is a composition, not just an individual smell

Usually many compounds that smell are used in perfumes, along with compounds which are needed as solvents or dyes etc. Perfumes are normally 5-10% fragrances in a 90:10 ethanol:water mixture. Cis-jasmone is an important fragrance and more than 10000 tonnes of it are produced every year. Pure scent compounds such as cis-jasmone are very expensive and thats why perfumery is such a lucrative business. You can try and work out how many scent compounds are in a certain perfume by looking at its ingredients and working out which ones smell (with a search engine like google), however most companies put "parfum" on the ingredients (amongst other 'smelly' ingredients) which really gets on my nerves >:(. I wonder if you phone up the company they'll tell you whats in it ???.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfume has quite a lot of information- I havent't bothered reading it  but it may contain a couple of answers to some of your questions.

I just need to find someone now who can experiment to find my unique smell.
Thanks

That's the hard part.
I don't suppose you know any professional perfume testers, do you?  ;)

Your unique smell may be hard to replicate because not many fragrance producers are big in the business of replicating body smells, unless I misinterpreted you.
A few major fragrance producers are:
International Flavours and Fragrances, Givaudan-Roure, Firmenich, Symrise, and Quest International.
You may be able to try conacting them if you need a very special fragrance, or there are many online (chemical) fragrance vendors that may be able to help you if the smell you're looking for is a popular one (ie flowery/fruity etc.).
Either way, good luck finding your fragrance, and if you need help on a suitbale chemical for a certain smell, feel free to ask here!
