Reaction of FeS2
« on: December 25, 2016, 08:26:09 AM »
I know that FeS2 can react with O2 and H2O resulting in FeSO4 and H2SO4
2FeS2+7O2+2H2O>2FeSO4+ 2H2SO4
But i wonder if it is possible for FeS2 to react with Hydrocloric acid.
I've looked everywhere in the textbooks and internet but cant find the possible answer.
I'd appreciate it if someone could help me.

Pyrite can be easily dissolve oxidatively. Concentrated H2SO4 or HNO3 are used (redox reactions).
Explanation why it does not dissolve in HCl (without oxygen) is rather uknown since solubility product cannot be measured to date.
