Reaction between Citric Acid and Lawsone (Henna)
« on: January 30, 2017, 07:21:38 PM »
What is the chemical reaction equation with citric acid and lawsone (henna) as the reactants? What are the products of this reaction?

I did some research, and I found that Citric Acid affects the color intensity of Henna, as it makes the henna to turn darker. I found the individual chemical formulas of Henna and Citric Acid. the chemical formula of lawsone (henna) is C10H603, and the chemical formula of Citric Acid is C6H807. But, I am not sure what the products of this chemical reaction between lawsone and citric acid is. Can you please help me?

Color change doesn't require reaction, pH change is often enough.

Thank you. But, I intend to use a colorimeter to measure the change of color intensity, as henna is an effective indicator. Therefore, to do my theoretical calculations, I need the chemical reaction equation of lawsone + citric acid  :rarrow: products. Can you please help me in figuring out this chemical reaction, as I do not know the products of this reaction?

Thank you.

We're glad to help.

Sounds like a good experiment.

No, you don't.  No optical instrument needs the name of a product to function.  A thermometer reads the same temperature in a known sample, or an unknown, or a sample to complicated to understand.

Do you know the products of any reaction?  Let's try one:

HCl + NaOH  :rarrow: NaCl + H2O

That's an easy one.  billnotgatez: took the time to draw the structural formula of lawsone and citric acid, do you see how your looking up the molecular formula --  C10H6O3  really doesn't tell the whole story?  We have a sub-forum here called Organic Chemistry, where problems such as this one can possibly be worked out.  But no, we won't teach you 3 years of university-level classes, one posting at a time.  That's part of the Forum Rules{click}.  You agreed to follow these rules when you signed up.  I'm not an organic chemistry expert, but I don't suspect there is a reaction.

Also, Borek: told you there may be no reaction, simply the presence of acid in solution may change the lawsone to another colored form, that is exactly the definition of the word indicator, which you seem to know.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

Thank you for the insight. In my experiment, I will be adding different concentrations of citric acid to Henna. But, I am not sure what the products of this reaction is. I am in IB Chemistry, and I need the products to do theoretical calculations.

Acetic Acid and Lawsone (henna)
« Reply #10 on: May 25, 2020, 11:08:31 AM »
hi, i'm doing an experiment where i will be mixing different concentrations of acetic acid with henna powder and applying that paste to wool. I wanted to ask what techniques i could use for measuring the colour intensity of the dye on the wool. Why would a higher acid concentration lead to a darker stain?

I was also wondering if someone did a similar ia and could maybe share it with me; would be a great :)

Yes. I’m also doing my Chemistry IA with Henna. I’m doing it with 4 solutions, the controlled is just henna and the other 3 are
1. Henna + sugar + lemon juice
2. Henna + sugar
3. Henna + lemon juice

I dipped a cotton fabric in each solutions and checked if the lemon and sugar solution intensifies the colour of henna.
