Lab Check Please Help
« on: April 08, 2017, 07:10:39 PM »
Hi, I have a lab due tomorrow and I think that I made an error, but I cannot seem to find it. Please check it over for me. I am in charge of beaker #2 (sucrose). I was given the theoretical temperature change of 1.63°C and I recorded -2°C. The lab was to put 30.0grams of sucrose into 100.0 grams of ice water. I do not understand why my change in temperature/mole is -22.2°C.

This table gives an endothermic heat of solution for sucrose as you found
http://webserver.dmt.upm.es/~isidoro/dat1/Heat%20of%20solution%20data.pdf
  • Counting only the heat capacity of water, I'd get -1K.
  • These tables are for infinite dilution. 30g/100g is a lot.
  • Measuring 0.1K isn't obvious.
Side note: the unit for temperature variations is K. °C is supposed to serve only for temperatures relative to melting water.
