Esterfication of acids with multiple acidic groups

(1/1)

budullewraagh:
how does one name esters of organic acids that have multiple acidic functional groups (ex citric acid)?  what would it be called with say, 1 of those groups "esterfied"?  what about two?  what about all three?

AWK:
It is easier to esterify all carboxyl groups at once. Partial esterified esters can be obtained by a careful hydrolysis of di(tri)-ester with stoichiometric amount of KOH or NaOH

budullewraagh:
ok, but how do you name them?

movies:
This is the name that ChemDraw give me if I put an ester on one of the termini of citric acid:

2-hydroxy-2-(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)succinic acid

and the systematic name for citric acid:

2-hydroxypropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid

So it looks like you name the ester sidechain separately and tack it on to the name for the diacid.

budullewraagh:
oh ok thanks
