How to follow Markovnikov's rule?
« on: November 04, 2017, 06:41:23 AM »
Hello!
I have this addition reaction, but I don't know how to follow Markovnikov's rule in this...

CH3CH=CHCH2CH2CH2CH2CH3 + HBr --> CH3C-CH2CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3    or   CH3CH2-CCH2CH2CH2CH2CH3 ???
                                                                     |                                                             |
                                                                     Br                                                          Br
Both carbon atoms next to the double bond have 1 hydrogen atom. Where will the Br be added and where the hydrogen? Or will we have a 50%-50% mixture of both products?
Thank you

Think about Carbeniumion and the inductive Effect.  What is more stable?  But I also think you will get both products but in an other ratio as 50:50.
