chem lab confusion HELP NEEDED
« on: November 05, 2017, 12:08:20 AM »
Hi guys. I'm doing a lab on the reactions of alcohols. In it i have 3 reactions
test tube A: water, potassium permanganate, and ethanol
test tube A: HCl, potassium permanganate, and ethanol
test tube A: NaOH, potassium permanganate, and ethanol

One of the lab questions says, "write balanced equations for the oxidation of ethanol in acidic, basic, and neutral media. (assume the carboxylic acid is formed in each case)"
Do you guys know how i can come up with the reactions?

TY

Alcohol oxidation part will be more or less the same, the main difference will be in the products of the permanganate reduction.

Ok so what would the answer be? I'm still confused.

What do you know about permanganate reduction? What possible products (with different oxidation states) can you think of?

I think MnO2, MnO2+, and MnO42-
so i guess that would be for the neutral, acidic, and basic solutions, respectively. The problem is idk how to come up with the reactions
