Hydrolysis of nitril to carboxylic acid
« on: January 29, 2018, 02:28:10 PM »
I tried to hydrolyse my nitrile in conc sulfuric acid over night. I got full conversion but the product was the amide. Why didn't the nitrile go all the way to to the carboxylic acid....Any suggestions ? Should I dilute the acid in order to increase the water concentration?

Yes you are right.
You need to dilute the acid. But before doing anything, google this patent and read it carefully.
Hydrolysis of nitriles to carboxylic acids, US Patent 3542822, (1970)
