Any useful tips for cooling to -10 degC
« on: January 13, 2018, 08:20:24 PM »
Hi,

I want to try a particular reaction at -10 degC and I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about this. I've had a salt-ice bath suggested (1:1 ratio salt:ice by weight) but I'm wondering are there any other methods that any of you might know of?

Cheers!

these lists are pretty useful as a reference

One could also try to find a walk in freezer or adjustable fridge.

The easiest is to pour sodium chloride over wet ice and stir well.

Thanks everyone, I tried the liquid nitrogen/glycol and salt/ice suggestions and they both worked quite well!

Liquid N2 sounds a bit cold for -10C.  I was going to suggest dry ice in IPA. Even that might be too cold.
Tonight I’m going to party like it’s on sale for $19.99!
