That’s pretty neat, but can you give an example how this can be used for microscopy?

Dyes with certain fluorescent and bleaching properties are used in super resolution microscopy techniques like STORM imaging, which won the Nobel prize in chemistry 2 years ago

My initial thought was "switch the light off if it is so sensitive", but if it is photochromism perhaps it is reversible.
