Why can't calcium chloride be used to dry ammonia gas?

I'm getting a variety of answers from the internet and some of these include:

the formation of additional products such as calcium hydroxide and ammonium chloride
the pH difference between the two causing a reaction
the formation of a complex compound,  CaCl3.8NH3

As such, I am quite confused to as what the reason is
