Reduce amount of water before liquid-liquid extraction in separation funnel?

I should perform liquid-liquid extraction with petrol ether in separation funnel, but I have too much water, like 250 mL. How can I reduce amount of water before performing the extraction?

Sometimes the relative volumes of the two extraction solvents is important.  Why not perform the extraction in several portions?
