What is the right equation for reactants if the product is MO (oxide of a metal)?
M + O2 = MO or M2 + O2 = MO

Neither nor. It is like to calculate fractions in mathematics, You have M and you have O2 . How many M you need to get MO and how many of it you get?

I need 1 mole of M to get MO.
I have 1 mole of M.

But you have 1 mole O2. So how many mole M you need and how many mole MO you get? Or other way around, if you only have 1 mole M, how many moles O2 you need.

I need 1 mole of M
I have 1 mole of MO because the coefficient is 1 before MO. So I have a mole of MO

Please write the correct equation.
2M + O2 = 2MO

If you have only one mole M then it is.

M + 0.5 O2 => MO

The other half mole O2 will be left.

Please write the correct equation.
2M + O2 = 2MO

Finally, yes this is correct but as everyone has been trying to point out to you this is 2 moles of metal M reacting with one mole of diatomic oxygen O2 giving 2 moles of metal oxide MO.

You mean 1 mole of diatomic oxygen = 2 moles of monoatomic oxygen? Could you simplify this point, please?

Yes it is, but this was not the point.

Could you explain please what you mean by 'Yes it is, but this was not the point'?

Yes it is.  But in this discussion is was not the point.

If you have 1 mole M and 1 mole O2 and you get 1 mole MO,

then the equation is M + 0.5 O2  :rarrow: MO

the other half O2 will be left.

How are moles of molecules vs moles of atoms related?
« Reply #13 on: August 25, 2018, 09:48:06 PM »
'Mg + 0.5 O2 = MgO"
1. Is here 1 mole of O atoms in the product = 0.5 moles of O atoms  + 0.5 moles of O atoms in the reactant?
'2Mg + O2 = 2MgO
2. is 2  moles of O atoms in the product = 1 mole of O atoms + 1 mole of O atoms = 1 mole of O2 molecules?
