Are the following materials derived from petroleum?
« on: July 15, 2006, 12:09:24 PM »
Could anyone confirm whether the following materials are derived from petroleum: terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, ethylene oxide, and paraxylene?   Thanks much.

From Wikipedia

However, in the 1950s, increased demand for benzene, especially from the growing plastics industry, necessitated the production of benzene from petroleum. Today, most benzene comes from the petrochemical industry, with only a small fraction being produced from coal.

From other articles it appears that benzene is used to create many of the chemicals you listed. Therefor indirectly petrochemicals are used to make them.
