Making anhydrous MgSO4
« on: September 02, 2004, 01:05:18 AM »
Hi,
I'm trying to make some anhydrous magnesium sulphate by baking some hepta and tri hydrated magnesium sulphate in an oven.  Does anyone know what temperature to use and for how long?
Thanks in advance.  :)

Gary.

You must get the temperature above 200 deg C, as between 150 and 200 you will make the monohydrate, so in this case the hotter the better. I would suggest at least 24 hours drying time but I'm not sure, it may only take a couple of hours. The product will not decompose to MgO and SOx until very high temps ie >500degC

Cheers for the temperature advice.

Anyone know how long to bake it then?
