What are methods for preventing flask blow out?
« on: September 26, 2018, 02:05:30 PM »
On rare occasions while using Erlenmeyer flasks to boil down fluids I have had the fluid pop and come out of the flask. Some were caused by obvious reasons like too much fluid, too high of temperatures, etc. I tried using larger flasks to solve the problem, but then boiling takes much longer, too long realistically. Are there any practical methods of preventing this? I noticed that with beakers this problem does not occur, however beakers tend to have miniscule amounts of fluid deposit outside the flask, which is of great disadvantage. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

A boiling stone or stirbar to act as a nucleation point for gas bubbles.

Sometimes a stir bar isn't good enough and boiling chips are what you really need, but might not be able to get on short notice. I've had some luck (carefully) wrapping some disposable pasteur pipettes in foil and breaking them to put in my solutions.

Word of warning, don't add them to an already boiling liquid. Same with the stir bars incidentally. You want those stirring away before you start.
