Career Advise Needed For Jobs Prospects in USA
« on: November 25, 2018, 09:04:19 PM »
Hello Experts,

I am a Chemistry student who loves the subject and always wanted to make a career in the field. I am currently in USA and want to work here in future. I have completed my education in India and have the following degree.

Master of Sciences (M.Sc) - Chemistry (From Nagpur University, India) Specialization in Physical Chemistry.

Can you please suggest me on how to approach this. Would you suggest me to take up a masters degree in USA. If yes, then what are the best courses that are available. Also, what are the best jobs that are out there for  chemistry majors.

Any advise is appreciated!

Regards,
SH

Don't take another masters. If anything do a PhD, but they are long in the USA, they only take 3 years in England. If you had a PhD you would be much more attractive for visa sponsorship in the USA because masters level jobs are entry level. I did my PhD in England and now live in Canada with a PhD level job, however, it wasn't with visa sponsorship as I'm a permanent resident already.

Thank you so much for your reply Jeff. Some really good information. I thought about PhD but as you said, it's gonna take a lot of time. I am hoping to get a work permit in USA  in one year and looking forward to start a career as soon as I can. What are your suggestion on that. And how do you suggest I should research different courses and job prospects available.

The US is a tough place to get a job in chemistry if you're not from there or have working rights, and don't have your own funding. I don't know what your visa situation is, but if you need sponsorship for a working visa then I would say that you aren't going to get anywhere with a Masters. As the previous poster has said, Masters level jobs within chemistry are usually entry level positions and I imagine that most employers are not interested in the hassle of sorting out visas for such a job (they're only barely interested in PhD's these days). What sort of work do you think you would want to do? Are you interested in research? Would you consider doing a PhD somewhere else, like maybe Germany or the UK?
