Is there a program to quickly draw molecules?
« on: December 04, 2018, 07:00:16 AM »
How do people get these nice drawings like attached? I often ask questions where a picture is needed. There must be a program where you can quickly make drawing that's better then MSPaint. How can I make drawing like in the first attach and spare people from making these mspaint monstrosities?

Try chemsketch, its free.
Chemdraw is the gold standard for everyone but its licenced and its quite expensive. Chemsketch si good enough for most applications

Forum supports SMILES, for many simple cases you can have them drawn for you in your post without having to draw, export as image, attach.

SCC(OC=O)CCCN

So you draw a molecule in SMILES then it puts out a code like:[***smiles]SCCC(OC=O)CCCN[/smiles] type that in.

And you get SCCC(OC=O)CCCN

Is this a free program to download? I'm guessing you can use it to make drawings too?

Edit this is fun lets try changing a few

SCCC(OC=O)CCCCCCN
SCCC(OC=O)CSCN
SCCCCCCCCCC(OC=O)CCCNSS

CCCN
C(OC=O)CCCN
CC

SCC(OC=O)CCOCONONONNO

We use package called Indigo, a bit modified to our needs.

As you were already told, ChemSketch will be much better for your needs. Indigo was great for automatic, scripted conversion of SMILES to image, but it is in many ways limited and inconvenient to use in other circumstances.

ChemDraw Ultra and Hyperchem are good.
