synthesis order of events inquiry
« on: December 19, 2018, 11:37:28 PM »
Attached is an exercise I was attempting.
My interpretation:
1. CH3Cl and AlCl3
2. conc. fuming H2SO4
3. tBuCl and AlCl3
4. dilute H2SO4

However, the answer has my #1 and #3 switched.
Wouldn't it be sterically more hindered to add tBu first? I don't understand.

Thank you.

What are the sulfuric acid steps for?

And I'm generally on board with the your logic for alkulation order. Doing T butyl first will probably cause more Para substitution.
