Upgrading Forum to 2.0.15
« on: March 14, 2019, 08:56:06 AM »
Hi everyone, the site will be upgraded during the next few days to SMF 2.0.15. Also, we will switch the site to use SSL certificates and https during this time. If you see any bugs or any issues creep in please report it here.
Most Common Suggestions I Make on the Forums.
1. Start by writing a balanced chemical equation.
2. Don't confuse thermodynamic stability with chemical reactivity.
3. Forum Supports LaTex

I am a bit concerned about https. There will be definitely problems with hotlinked images, they will generate tons of warnings, as they will not use the same certificate and they are not always hosted on servers with https. At other forums I know it ended with hosting a copy of every image on the forum server (costly in terms of space and traffic).

The upgrade itself won't be visible, latest changes (since at least 2.0.12 where I stopped installing them) were mostly related to security of some obscure functions that are not enabled at CF.

Do you think we should disable hotlinking images? We could disable the {img} tag, I think we can disable it.

It's difficult - some things probably need images more than others - descriptions of set-ups for instance, and maybe to some degree equations and formulae. But we also need to discourage screendumps of questions, especially those that are lo-res and / or orientated awkwardly.

As long as we can attach images to posts that's not as wrong as it may look. My policy was always to ask people to attach images, to not risk they will get lost.

I am more worried about old threads, but I will need to do some tests. Disabling img tags is always an option.

OK, looks like the external images are dealt with correctly, so probably there is no problem: https://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=52031.0

They go through CF proxy, so they eat bandwidth:

I wanted to point out something that is trivial bur a change.
When I logged on the log on page was very different.
But, once in the rest looks the same as always.

#Borek. Forum Rules link looks like it didn't make the upgrade.

SMILES engine is dead, same happens with every thread using it.

Edit: OK, I see it is a matter of changed approach to the SQL calls.

For now just switched it off. Turns out LaTeX stopped working as well.
