Alcohol water solution densities and freezing points
« on: January 19, 2024, 07:17:22 AM »
Hello!

I'm trying to check a windshield washer if it's isopropyl or methanol based by measuring density and it's freezing point.
Trying to find reliable data in google.
For freezing points of isopropanol water solutions the data from wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropyl_alcohol gives −61.7 °C at 70% while the data from engineering toolbox at https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ispropanol-water-d_988.html#gsc.tab=0 gives -29 °C. So it looks like there's incorrect data out there and one needs to know how to look for the data that can be trusted.

I guess I should use google scholar + sci hub for this but I don't know the correct keywords to search for. I tried "water isopropanol solution freezing point".

For densities I've found this page https://www.handymath.com/cgi-bin/isopropanolwghtvoltble5.cgi?submit=Entry, but again I don't know if it can be trusted.

Thanks for your help

Good question, sadly one I don't know answer to.

Wikipedia gets data from some randomly looking page that I wouldn't trust (check their references).

I checked books I happen to have here (polish equivalents of CRC Handbook), unfortunately none of them has the data you are looking for.
