what the hell is this piece of metal
« on: January 27, 2024, 05:33:38 PM »
Wierd metal i found that whenever i touch it, it makes me itchy, i found its not magnetic and it seems too heavy for its size, ive attached some pictures so if you could find out what this is it would help me a LOT because i either want to sell it or just throw it out because i dont want to be itchy.

Just wanted to say, there are some scratch marks on the right side of the paper because i scratched it with this metal to see if it would leave a mark, it did. (like a pencil that you can barely see)

Probably it is lead. But only with picture cannot tell anything. Maybe you can get the volume of that piece and also the weight. Then you can calculate the specific gravity and check in a table.
Orif you have the possibilities to get analysis. XRF would be one method. Or dissolve in acid and get ICP or AAS.

What's the volume with your measured size?

If it is soft and ductile, it is most likely lead, as you were already suggested. Does it get shiny when scratched, and dull again after some time?

ductility test would be hard to do, its too small to bend

Just hit it with a hammer, does it feel soft?

Note that it can be not a pure metal, but some kind of alloy. Lead is often alloyed to make it harder.

1.725cm³

Less, there is a hole.

Still, it is much less dense than I expected.

Might be zinc. Scrape a bit off and try a few tests?
