Purchasing gas syringes and balances in the UK
« on: March 24, 2008, 08:31:53 PM »
Hi,

I want to perform some simple quantitive chemistry to attempt to work out stoichiometry of some reactions and demonstrating conservation of mass. For example generating carbon dioxide by adding acid to calcium carbonate.

I'm looking to purchase in UK a gas syringe, say 200 cm3 capacity, and an accurate balance, say to 200g at 0.1g "resolution".

I have looked online and the cheapest analytical balance I can find is around £250 (I can afford £50) and I can't find gas syringes at all.

Is there a well known supplier of small quantities (i.e. one) of these items?

Thanks

Clive

As for the balance - no idea if it will work, but I would start with eBay.
ChemBuddy chemical calculators - stoichiometry, pH, concentration, buffer preparation, titrations.info

Hamilton make Gas syringes up to 2L in capacity.

Check out the main suppliers

Fisher
Aldrich (supelco)
Alltech

even Hamilton http://www.hamiltoncompany.com/syringes/syringesSuper.asp

Check out fisher for balances as well, they often do deals on end of line stuff.
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

You could try some of the second hand brokers for science equipment. Look up the following:

Rich-Mond Agencies
Severn Sales
Science Exchange
Sarose

Hope this helps.

Tonight I’m going to party like it’s on sale for $19.99!
