few questions regarding cyanide
« on: March 19, 2009, 12:38:54 PM »
Hi

i if my knowledge is right one should not prepare cyanide in water ( i think it forms hydrogen cyanide..which escapes from the solution and is also harmful)..plz correct me if i am wrong...keeping this is mind i have few questions..

(a) i am trying to develop a method for estimation of cyanide..so how sound one prepare the stock solutions??

(b) is cyanide ions unstable in water?? if so why??

(c) lets say i add sodium caynoborohydrate to water will it as unstable as other forms of cyanide salts??

(sorry if am wrong somewhere...)]

thanks a lot

Your questions are highly suspicious, and I don't feel comfortable answering them.

Keep the cyanide solution basic.  Will not interfere with standardized cyanide concentration and will reduce HCN formation which is not just bad from a toxicity standpoint, but also your concentration would change over time introducing systematic error into your analysis.

The hell?  A question about cyanide is suspicious?  It was not a "how much does it take to kill someone?"  it was an an analytical chemistry question.

It's not suspicious, but it does sound like he shouldn't be messing with cyanide.

One wonders what cyanide would be like in the hands of a person as unintelligent as this, my refusal to answer his questions I think is correct even if you disagree with my reasoning.

Just curious: if you're already talking about making standards, do you have a method in mind?  Eg titration, spectroscopy, chromatography. . . ?

i understand your point of view..but i am not going to jump in a with out much knowledge gathering..thats why the post..my intention where just to understand certain points...

to train,
No at present i don't have a solid method in hand..i am evaluating possibilities...doing my groundwork...(my preference would be a chromatography or spectroscopy method)

to others,
as one of my process has addition of sodium cynoborohydrate..my task is to evaluate if there is any carry over of CN in the final product...sorry if i sound naive with my questions...(just using this forum to further educate myself)

thanks a lot
