Another pH question
« on: December 04, 2009, 07:24:37 PM »
My last question created such a heated argument that I thought I would ask another question in a new topic.

Pure water is pH 7. There is a H concentration of 1X10-7 mol/liter, and the OH concentration is also 1X10-7 mol/liter. Lets say I take a liter of water and add to it 36.5X10-7 grams of HCl, or 1X10-7mol of HCl. How does the H and OH balance change? Is there 2X10-7 H and still 1X10-7 OH? What would the ph be? -log(2X10-7) = 6.699?

My chem book states 1X10-5 M HCl has a ph of 5, a 1X10-6 M Hcl has a pH of 6, so does a 1X10-7 M HCl have a ph of 7 or 6.699?
