Bulk KCl becomes hard
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:02:56 AM »
Hi there.

I thought this would be the most fitting of areas to post this in so here goes:

I am having a problems with regards to KCl (granular). We ship it to overseas in Metric Tonne Bags using Coasters for transport. The Salt is takes around 2-3 months to reach its destination when in these tankers which are protected from the elements.

When we come to using the salt for our operations the salt is compacted and requires digging of the salt into smaller peices for us to use it. Is there anything going on chemically that is causing the KCl to be become a solid block and not staying granular? Mositure content?

We also have NaCl shipped in very much the same way and when we come to use this, it remains granular and no manual digging is required.

Thanks in advance,

John

KCl is hygroscopic, humidity in the air is the problem - caking is a common problem with prolonged storage of KCl. Are the bags you are using airtight? If you package the salt in a dry atmosphere in airtight sealed bags the problem should be reduced.
