Can anyone help me with the starting material?
« on: March 06, 2014, 08:41:31 AM »
Hi Guys!

I've stumbled upon a question that asks me to find the starting material.  This one uses a Grignard reagent but the problem is the alcohol is attached to the cyclic compound.  As far as I know, the Grignard reagent will break the carbonyl to form the alcohol and add the alkyl but how can you form the alcohol if it is attached to the cyclo compound?  I tried solving it with some answers below.

Is it correct?  Is this even possible? Thanks in advance.

What about an intramolecular reaction?

I'm sorry but I don't have any idea how to apply the intramolecular reaction here.  From what i read about alcohol formation using Grignard, it will break the carbonyl to form the hydroxy which leads to alcohol and add the alkyl group.  Pls do share what you know how to apply the intramoceluar reaction here.
