Aromatic hydrocarbons - How to extinguish aromatic hydrocarbons
« on: September 10, 2016, 05:18:24 PM »
Hello!

I'm studying at university and I can't understand the following question :

How to extinguish the aromatic compounds. Despite they are cyclic compounds. The formula is X=4n+2 how do I find the X?

If someone can explain my I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
Elvis.

You're using a definition of extinguish that isn't apt in this context.  You're going to have to explain more fully what you're trying to say.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.

He probably ment distinguish :)

Elviswe: You just use any integer between 0 and ∞ and see if it fits. Depending on the compound but usualy 0 or 1 for one membered rings, 2 for two membered and 3 for 3 membered etc..

Do you know Huckel's rule of  aromaticity ..
X = 4n+2
where X is the number of pi electrons delocalized in the completely planar conjugated ring ...read more about it in books or google it .
